The easiest way to get started with your at-home skin check is by using the ABCDE rule.
What Is the ABCDE Rule?
In dermatology, the ABCDE rule highlights common warning signs of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer. Catching these signs early often leads to more effective care:
A: Asymmetry
When you look at a mole, both halves should look similar. If they do not match, it could be a sign worth checking. For example:
- One half looks different from the other
- The shape appears uneven or lopsided
- One side may be raised while the other is flat
B: Border
Healthy moles usually have smooth, well-defined edges. Irregular borders can signal a concern if:
- Edges look jagged, scalloped, or notched
- Borders appear blurred or hard to define
- The outline spreads unevenly into the surrounding skin
C: Color
Most moles are a single shade. A mix of colors can be a warning sign, such as:
- Multiple shades such as brown, black, red, or blue
- Uneven color distribution throughout the mole
- Areas that appear lighter or darker than the rest
D: Diameter
Size matters, but changes matter even more when:
- Larger than 6mm, about the size of a pencil eraser
- Gradually increasing in size over time
- Noticeably bigger than your other moles
E: Evolving
An evolving mole is one of the clearest warning signs. Look for:
- Changes in size, shape, or color
- New symptoms like itching, tenderness, or bleeding
- A mole that looks different from your others
Trust Your Instincts and Get Answers
Skin cancer screening is important for everyone. Doing regular skin checks at home can help you spot changes early. Take a few minutes once a month to look over your skin in a well-lit room, using a mirror for hard-to-see areas like your scalp, back, and the soles of your feet. Taking photos can also help you track changes over time.
